Bring your research with you, and take it out again
Nobody moves twenty years of research on a promise. So the import tells you what it did — record by record, including the parts it could not read — and the whole thing can be reversed for a week afterwards.
An import that reports on itself
Import GEDCOM 5.5.1 or 7, a GEDZIP with media, or GEDCOM X as JSON, XML or a .gedcomx archive. Review the preview, then read the report of what arrived, what merged, what was skipped and what needs attention.
Unsupported imported GEDCOM lines are preserved where round-tripping is supported and included in GEDCOM 7 export. Review the import report for format-specific warnings and missing files; an export is not a byte-for-byte copy of the original.

Four things to check before you trust an import
- Seven days to change your mind
- An import can be reversed completely for seven days, as long as you have not edited the records it created. Undo removes exactly what came in and leaves whatever the project held before it untouched — long enough to sleep on it, short enough that the offer is not still standing over work built on top.
- Intersex is a value the model holds
- There is one value, and one colour, for every case of the gender the application recognises, so an import cannot collapse intersex into unknown for want of somewhere to put it. The same rule is why the interface says gender rather than the interchange format's word for it.
- GEDCOM and GEDCOM X in, GEDCOM 7 out
- Leaves reads GEDCOM 5.5.1 and 7, GEDZIP archives and GEDCOM X in JSON, XML or .gedcomx archives. Exports use GEDCOM 7. Check that the application you are moving to supports that format.
- Getting your work back out is free
- Everything you own comes out as one zip — a GEDCOM per project and every file those projects hold, in folders somebody can open without instructions. There is no plan in which exporting your own research costs money.
What this does not do
A round trip is not a byte-for-byte copy
A 5.5.1 file that goes in comes back out as a version 7 file: the records are the same and the lines Leaves has no field for are re-written verbatim, but the file around them is ours rather than your old program's. And a project somebody else shared with you exports only if its owner allows it — your own projects always do.
